One-Time Payment vs Monthly Subscription Website: Which Costs Less?

7 min readInWebsite

Short answer

Over three years, a one-time-payment website is usually cheaper: Starter at Rp 1.500.000 works out to about Rp 41.700 per month, and Business at Rp 5.000.000 to about Rp 138.900 per month. A monthly subscription makes sense if your cash flow doesn't allow paying up front yet, or if your website's content changes every month. Whichever you choose, make sure the domain is registered in your name.

Two quotes have arrived at your table. One asks for Rp 1,5 million one-time payment, the other only a few hundred thousand per month. The second figure looks much lighter, and is indeed lighter in the first month. What determines which one is cheaper is what happens in the 36th month, and what remains in your hands if the payment stops.

Cheapest in the first month and cheapest by year three are rarely the same offer

The one-time payment model means the cost of building is paid once, and that's it. That's how we work: Starter Rp 1.500.000, Business Rp 5.000.000, and after that no monthly bills come to us. A .com domain, hosting, and SSL for the first year are already included in the package price.

The subscription model trades a large upfront figure for a small one that repeats. What you pay each month is usually not just the website, but also hosting, maintenance, and the right to use it for as long as you keep subscribing. The important difference is in those last words.

So those two offers are really selling different things. One sells an asset that becomes yours, the other sells a service that runs for as long as it's paid for. Comparing Rp 1,5 million with Rp 200 thousand per month without naming the time period is like comparing the price of buying a house with the rent for a room.

What you pay for each month is people's time, not the website files

A static website file doesn't change on its own. Once built, it just sits on the server until someone edits it. That's why a reasonable monthly fee always includes recurring work: monitoring the server, updating the system, replacing content, fixing what's broken, or adding new pages every month.

Before signing, ask the subscription provider to state its contents using verbs, not adjectives. How many times can the content be changed per month. How many hours is the response time if the website is down. Is adding new pages included or counted separately.

If the answer is just hosting plus maintenance without details, what you pay every month is actually close to renting hosting that you can buy yourself at the provider's price.

You find the break-even point with one division

Spread the one-time price over a reasonable period of use. Three years is a sensible figure for a small business website, because before that it usually hasn't had time to produce anything, and after that the design is due for a refresh anyway.

  • Starter Rp 1.500.000 divided by 36 months works out to about Rp 41.700 per month.
  • Business Rp 5.000.000 divided by 36 months works out to about Rp 138.900 per month.

Now turn it around for the subscription offer you have: divide the one-time price by the monthly fee, and the result is the number of months until the two are even. As an example, if the subscription you've been offered is Rp 200.000 per month, Rp 1.500.000 divided by Rp 200.000 comes to 7,5 months. Past that point, every following month is a difference you never get back, and by month 36 the total spent is Rp 7.200.000.

Two notes make this calculation more honest. For the Starter and Business packages, you pay the domain, hosting, and SSL from the second year onward yourself, directly to the providers, so add those to the one-time column. On the other side, check whether the first-year subscription price is still the same in the third year, because yearly increases are often written in clauses that rarely get read.

When a monthly subscription is the saner choice

What happens most often: cash flow. A business that has only been running for three months may not have Rp 1,5 million idle, while Rp 200 thousand per month can still be taken from the weekly margin. A website that is live today is more useful than an ideal website that is delayed until next year.

The second reason, your website is constantly changing. A restaurant that changes its menu every month, a tutoring center that opens new classes every quarter, or a store with rapidly rotating stock needs someone to manage it regularly. If you don't want to manage it yourself, the monthly fee pays for the labor, and that labor still needs to be paid in any model.

The third reason, you are testing an idea. If you are not yet sure your business will continue in six months, the ability to stop at any time has its own value. At this point, the subscription model is indeed superior, and we do not pretend otherwise.

A one-time payment also has costs that don't show in the package price

Our technical support runs for one month after your website is live, and it includes bug and error fixes, not feature additions. After that month passes, change requests are considered additional work, and we will estimate them before working on them.

Starting from the second year, you pay for your domain, hosting, and SSL directly to the provider, under your own name. We assist with the process without additional fees, but the money does not go through us and the amount depends on the provider you choose. The AI chatbot is also only included for the first year in the Business and Enterprise packages, while in the Starter package it is an add-on for Rp 500.000.

The payment itself does not have to be made all at once upfront: 50% before we start and 50% after the website is finished and you approve it, with a deadline of seven days since the invoice is issued. We discuss the details of each component of this cost separately in the article about the cost of making a website.

The questions that decide what's left if you stop paying

This is the part that is most often overlooked, even though the answer is more determining than the difference of hundreds of thousands per month. Ask these four things to any provider, including us:

  • Whose name is the domain registered under. With us, it's under your name, with full ownership and access from the first day, even though we're the ones handling the registration.
  • If the cooperation stops, does the website die or can it be transferred. A static website can be moved to another hosting service, as long as you can retrieve the files.
  • Who holds the source code. In the Enterprise package, the handover of the source code along with README and database diagrams is included in the price. After the payment is complete, the content and visual assets we create specifically for you become your property, while the internal components we reuse across projects remain our property.
  • Where does the data from the contact form land. If it goes to your own email, the history of potential buyers remains safe when the vendor changes.

If the subscription offer answers these four questions openly, the monthly price is worth considering. If the answer is evasive, you're renting access to a website that you can't take with you.

If you've already fallen into a scheme like that and want to get out, our way of rebuilding your old website and transferring the domain to your name is on the redesign and migration of the website page.

Make both offers cover the same things before comparing the numbers

Create two columns, then fill in the same rows for both: the total spent up to the 36th month, what's included in the first year, who owns the domain, how long repairs are guaranteed, and what's left if you stop. Two new quotes can be compared after these five rows are filled.

In our column, the numbers are as follows. Starter Rp 1.500.000 already includes a .com domain, hosting, and SSL for a year, plus one month of support after going live, and the work takes around three days since we receive the brief and complete materials. Business Rp 5.000.000 adds much more content space, photos on Cloudflare CDN, animations and interactions, AI chatbot for the first year, and three initial blog articles, with work taking one to two weeks. The complete details of each package are available side by side on the pricing page, and the results can be viewed one by one on the portfolio.

Before deciding, we invite you to chat for 30 minutes and mention the package that makes the most sense, including if the answer is the cheapest package. The final price is locked in a written proposal one to two days later, before any money is transferred.
